Engine Valve Adjustment

Valve adjustment is very important and delicate, as it determines the correct functioning and performance of the engine. The clearance of the tappets is the space left between the valves and the camshaft in the overhead distribution and between the valves and the rocker in the classic distribution. This clearance prevents the valves from sticking to the rocker or camshaft due to thermal expansion, which would keep the valves open and cause a loss of compression. To adjust, remove the timing cover and, following the manufacturer's instructions, use a feeler gauge to determine the correct gap between the rocker and valve when the piston is at top dead centre.
