Fuel Tank Breather Valve

Model: Volkswagen Golf MK 5, Golf 5, Golf V - Years 2003-2008

Near the fuel tank filler neck, there is a breather valve that, when pressed, allows trapped air in the tank to escape during filling, thus enabling a bit more fuel to be introduced. When the tank is nearly full, pressing the breather valve produces a hissing sound generated by the escaping air. The breather does not increase fuel efficiency but merely allows for adding a bit more fuel to increase the tank's capacity. It is also possible to remove the internal spring of the breather valve so that the button does not need to be pressed, thus creating a faster venting. Caution: Do not do this on a petrol vehicle. Petrol vapours are flammable and should not be released into the atmosphere. A petrol tank is connected to the engine's emissions system to burn these vapours.
