The EGR circuit collects some exhaust gases at the outlet and re-injects them into the engine's air intake: the main advantage is that NOx is reduced at the source, limiting the quantities produced during the combustion process, rather than through post-treatment of exhaust gases. The EGR cooler cools the exhaust gases before they enter the engine to improve temperature management. By cooling the gas, the combustion temperature is reduced, and the amount of NOx particles formed at high temperatures is decreased. The EGR cooler is located next to the engine's exhaust manifold, and the acidic action of the gases can damage it, leading to leaks of coolant and necessitating replacement.
