How to Change the Spark Plugs on a BMW 1 Series E87 Petrol

Let's see how to change the spark plugs on a BMW 1 Series E87 petrol version. On many BMW engines, the spark plugs are located deep in long wells, so it is crucial that no foreign objects fall into the spark plug well and that the spark plugs are tightened with the correct torque. Open the bonnet, disconnect the battery, and remove the engine cover: you will see the 4 ignition coils. Disconnect the electrical connector from each coil, and unscrew the fixing screw that secures it to the cover. Pull the coil straight up. Before touching the spark plug, use a blower to blow away any dirt accumulated at the base of the coil: this is essential to prevent dirt from falling into the cylinder. Insert the spark plug socket (preferably magnetic) into the well, loosen it a few turns, and carefully complete the removal. Insert the new spark plug into the well carefully to ensure the thread engages perfectly; then tighten it to the correct torque (N43/N46 23 Nm; N52/N53 25 Nm). Refit the coil, secure the screw, reconnect the electrical connector, and repeat for the other cylinders (it is advisable to work on one spark plug at a time to avoid mixing up the coils). Refit the engine cover, reconnect the battery, and start the engine.
