How to Replace the Rear Shock Absorbers on a Citroen C4

On a Citroen C4, replacing the rear shock absorbers is a typical task when the rear end becomes softer, the car bounces over bumps, or there are sharp noises over potholes and ridges. This operation requires attention, especially for safety: the car should be on a level surface, braked, and raised stably with axle stands, leaving the jack only where necessary to support the rear arm during disassembly. After removing the wheel, work on the shock absorber by locating its two mounting points: the lower one on the arm/hub and the upper one towards the body. Before loosening the bolts, it is helpful to slightly support the arm so that the suspension remains controlled and does not drop suddenly when the shock absorber is released. Once the fixings are unscrewed, the shock absorber is removed and compared with the replacement part to check length, attachments, and orientation. Before fitting the new component, also check the rubber bushes and any dust covers/bump stops: if they are cracked or worn, they should be replaced together, as they affect noise and durability. Reassembly is done by repositioning the shock absorber and inserting one fixing first to hold it in place, then the other, without forcing: if the holes do not align, adjust the height of the arm with the support underneath until the alignment returns to normal. For the final tightening, it is good practice to tighten with the car in its normal stance (or simulating the stance) where required, and to respect the torque settings from the workshop manual for the specific C4/engine type. Once the job is finished, replace the wheel, check for any play or noises, and take a cautious test drive, listening for any abnormal sounds from the rear.
