How to Replace the Timing Belt on a Ford Focus 1.5 TDCi 8V

The timing belt on this engine also drives the water pump and the high-pressure fuel pump. It is a fairly complex job that requires experience. Start by disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery, lift the car, and remove the front right wheel. Remove the wheel arch liner for access. It is advisable to partially drain the coolant if you are also replacing the water pump (as you should). Remove the accessory belt, then take off the crankshaft pulley (block the central bolt with a tool) and remove the timing cover. Position the piston of cylinder 1 at top dead centre (TDC); insert locking pins on the camshaft and crankshaft. Ensure everything is immobilised before removing the belt. Then loosen the tensioner and remove the old belt. Check the condition of the tensioner, bearings, and water pump (now is the time to replace it). Install the new belt, aligning the marks (on pulleys and belt). Now tension the belt according to the torque specified by the manufacturer; remove the locking pins; rotate the engine by hand (with a key on the crankshaft) for 2 complete turns and recheck the TDC alignment. Lock the shafts and verify that the alignment marks coincide. Now you can reassemble the cover, pulley, accessory belt, and wheel arch liner. Refill the coolant and reconnect the battery. Start the engine and check for any unusual noises.
