Instructions for Cleaning the MAF Sensor

Model: Ford Escort MK 4 - Years 1990-2000

The MAF sensor measures the mass of the incoming air flow and is more commonly known as the mass air flow meter; it is installed at the outlet of the engine air filter housing and connected to the hose that leads air to the intake manifold. To remove it, disconnect the corresponding connector and loosen the securing clips on both the filter side and the hose side. Once on the bench, detach the internal circlip to extract the filter mesh, and illuminate the small hole through which the sensor is visible to assess its state of fouling: it is indeed the fouling that alters the sensitivity of the sensor. Therefore, use brake cleaner by spraying it directly onto the sensor, repeating the operation several times until the sensor appears perfectly clean. Avoid scraping the sensor itself as it may become damaged. Refit the internal mesh and install the device back in the vehicle.
