How to Replace the Spark Plugs on an Opel Ampera

Replacing the spark plugs on an Opel Ampera (or Chevrolet Volt) is a feasible operation but requires attention to critical details due to its compact petrol engine, which must only be handled when cold. Additionally, the high-voltage system must always be disconnected; this is the most important step! Open the boot and lift the floor, find the orange disconnect button for the high-voltage battery pack and press it at least 5 minutes before proceeding, to allow the capacitors to discharge. The spark plugs are specific, with a longer thread than traditional cars, and the torque must be exact. The ignition coils are arranged in line on the cylinder head; press the locking lever and pull the orange clip, remove the fixing screw, take the coil out of its well, and before extracting the coil, clean all dirt around its base, remove the spark plug, place the new one in its place and tighten it with a torque wrench to 20 Nm. Repeat for all cylinders, then reinsert the coils and tighten with the screws; reconnect the 12V battery and then the HV battery, refit the covers and restart the engine to check that everything is in order.
