How to Change the Engine Oil and Filter on the Opel Astra H

On the Opel Astra H, changing the oil and filter requires the car to be on a flat and secure surface (use ramps or axle stands), with the engine off and cool. Prepare a large container, gloves, and goggles, as the oil may be hot and flow forcefully. Start by accessing the undertray and, if present, remove the lower cover enough to reach the sump. Position the container under the drain plug and unscrew the plug with the correct tool (a Torx T45 is specified). Allow the oil to drain completely, then replace the plug with the correct seal if required and tighten it to the specified torque of 26 Nm. Next, move to the cartridge oil filter from above in the engine bay. Unlock the cover of the housing (a 24 mm socket is specified) and remove the cartridge. Replace the O-ring/seal of the cover, clean the mating surfaces, and lightly lubricate the new seal with a thin layer of clean oil before reassembling. Reinsert the new cartridge, close the cover, and tighten it to the specified torque of 25 Nm. Now, fill the engine through the upper filler neck with the correct specification oil for your engine (check the quantity and grade in the manual). Close the cap, start the engine for a few seconds, then turn it off to allow the level to settle. Check the level and top up with small amounts if necessary.
