Smelling burnt oil in the 1.2 Puretech engine? It might not be the belt

The 1.2 PureTech engine (fitted in Peugeot 2008, 208, 308 and Citroën) is often associated with the oil-bath belt, but not all problems stem from there. If you smell burnt oil, experience high consumption, or have an irregular idle, the cause could be the oil vapour recovery valve (PCV). This valve is located under the rocker cover, and if it becomes blocked, it causes these symptoms. It is a less serious fault than the belt, but it needs to be addressed. Replacing it requires opening the cover: this is a delicate operation, so if you do not feel confident, rely on an experienced mechanic. Do not confuse this issue with the belt and do not attempt DIY without the necessary skills. If you have these symptoms, check the PCV valve. The solution is simple but must be carried out with care.
