The EGR valve has the function of introducing a part of the exhaust gases back into the intake in order to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions (NOx); the one in question is a pneumatically operated valve, that is, it uses the vacuum of the motor to open the valve through a membrane: to be able to test its operation, just connect a manual vacuum pump to the valve and check if it opens regularly and at the same time if it maintains the vacuum to test the integrity of the membrane. Once the valve has been intercepted, disconnect the vacuum hose and connect that of the vacuum pump, start the engine and pump with the lever to open the valve: engine operation will become irregular.
