EGR Valve Function Check

The EGR valve functions to reintroduce a portion of exhaust gases back into the intake to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions; this is a pneumatic actuated valve, meaning it uses engine vacuum to open the valve via a diaphragm: to test its operation, connect a manual vacuum pump to the valve and check if it opens properly and simultaneously maintains vacuum to test the integrity of the diaphragm. Once the valve is accessed, disconnect the vacuum hose and connect the vacuum pump hose, start the engine, and pump the lever to open the valve: the engine operation will become irregular.
