The code indicates an open circuit in the thermostat valve, but the most common cause is not a fault in the thermostat itself, but a wiring issue. The thermostat is located on the left side of the EA288 engine (looking from the front) at the bottom, near the timing belt, and has a 2 or 4 PIN electrical connector; follow the wiring harness from the thermostat connector, where it passes near contact with the exhaust manifold or other hot or sharp components. Look for signs of fraying or burns, where the harness rubs against a metal bracket or engine mount. Use a multimeter to measure an out-of-spec value; an infinite value (open circuit) confirms the component's failure.
