How to open the fuel door locked in the Toyota Highlander?

In the Toyota Highlander, it may happen that the fuel door gets stuck, for example due to a malfunction in the control button or the lock actuator. First, unlock the doors using the remote control, then open the trunk door and remove the plastic panel on the left wall of the compartment. Next, locate the actuator, grab the indicated lever and pull it towards the rear side of the vehicle to open the fuel door. At this point, you can refuel or repair the faulty element.
