How to clean and rebuild the starter motor in a Toyota Yaris

Cleaning and rebuilding the starter motor is not difficult but it requires a bit of patience. Disconnect the battery, remove the starter motor, usually fixed with two or three bolts, then open it by unscrewing the screws of the back cover. Check the brushes, if they are worn out, replace them. Clean everything with electrical contact spray and fine sandpaper, especially the collector. Check the bearings, if they are worn out, replace them. Reassemble everything carefully, grease the friction points and put the starter motor back in place. Reconnect the battery and test it, if it runs smoothly, you have done a great job. If you do not feel comfortable doing it yourself, contact a professional workshop.
