Gear oil is certainly one of the components most neglected by motorists (but sometimes also by repairers) and this is because it is very complicated to carry out the level checks and ends up in oblivion. Yet gearbox oil is a very important component in keeping an automobile's transmission efficient. From the point of view of the ordinary maintenance of manual gearboxes, the tendency of the manufacturers is not to foresee the replacement but only the verification and restoration of the level (generally every 4 years under normal driving conditions). The gearbox oil will be replaced only when, during the check, the mechanic deems it necessary. The fact that replacement is not foreseen now makes us reflect on how the quality of the transmission oil has improved. On the other hand, gearbox oil, contrary to what happens with engine oil, is not subjected to carbon residues due to combustion that contaminate it and therefore can last longer. In any case, replacing the gearbox oil is simple and cheap since it generally takes just over a kilogram: it involves draining the oil through the lower cap and then filling the gearbox with new oil through the rear cap until the oil starts to drain.

How to manually open the door of the Volkswagen Polo
