Gear Oil Replacement Instructions

Gear oil is certainly one of the most neglected components by motorists (and sometimes even by mechanics) because checking the level is quite complicated, leading it to be forgotten. However, gear oil is a very important component for maintaining the efficiency of the car's transmission. From the perspective of routine maintenance for manual gearboxes, manufacturers tend not to require replacement, only checking and restoring the level (generally every 4 years under normal driving conditions). Replacement of the gear oil is only anticipated when, during a check, the mechanic deems it necessary. The fact that replacement is no longer anticipated reflects the improvement in the quality of transmission oils. On the other hand, unlike engine oil, gear oil is not subjected to carbon residues from combustion that can contaminate it, allowing it to last longer. In any case, replacing the gear oil is simple and economical as it generally requires just over a kilogram: drain the oil through the lower plug and then fill the gearbox with new oil through the rear plug until the oil starts to overflow.
