How to know if the DPF regeneration is in progress or has occurred.

If our diesel vehicle does not have a warning light to indicate it, how can we know if the DPF is regenerating or if the regeneration has occurred normally? When regeneration is in progress, the onboard computer shows an instantaneous increase in fuel consumption that is higher than normal; the engine idle RPM also rises, and the sound of the engine becomes fuller. A key signal is the cooling fan, which is always on and running at maximum speed, even several minutes after we have turned off the engine. From the exhaust, we might notice a sharper smell or more intense heat, and we may feel slightly altered performance. If we suspect that regeneration is in progress, we should not turn off the engine and should extend our journey: we should only stop after the idle returns to normal. Signs of a recently completed regeneration include a loudly running fan, ticking noises from the engine compartment, and intense heat on the hood and in the exhaust area.
