The Correct Way to Wind Back the Brake Piston

Winding back the brake piston (especially for drum brakes or disc brakes with a mechanical handbrake) is a common task when replacing brake pads. Here’s the correct method to do it. This is necessary to create space for the new pads, which are thicker than the worn ones, and also to compensate for the wear that has caused the piston to extend. You will need a piston rewind tool, which can be found, for example, on Amazon with code B07CJLB225 at a price of £16.99, with free delivery. You will also need flat-nosed pliers, a torque wrench, and silicone grease. Lift the car and remove the wheel, then remove the brake caliper and clean the area around the piston with degreasing spray. The piston can be simple (and wound back with flat-nosed pliers) or have a rewind system, in which case you need the specific tool: insert it into the notches of the piston, turn it clockwise until the piston is fully retracted: do not force if the piston does not turn! You could damage the handbrake system. Optionally, open the brake fluid cap to relieve pressure. And: do not wind back the piston while holding the brake! A universal rewind tool is inexpensive and prevents damage; clean the piston before winding it back: rust or dirt can block movement; check the fluid level after rewinding. If it is too high, siphon off some fluid.
