What should you do if you realise you have filled up with the wrong fuel? If you notice immediately: do not start the engine but call a breakdown service to take the car to a garage, where they will drain the tank and clean the fuel system. If you realise after starting the engine, stop immediately and call the breakdown service; do not attempt to drive to the garage. If you put diesel in a petrol car (which is rarer, as the diesel nozzle is wider and does not fit into a petrol car's filler neck; however, it is less serious: just drain the tank; engine damage is rare). If petrol is poured into a diesel engine, then the damage is very serious: it can cause damage to the pistons, fuel pump, particulate filter, and there are very high costs involved: this is because petrol does not lubricate like diesel, thus damaging the injection pump and injectors.
