Let's see how an electric fuel pump works, like the one in the video: it has the essential task of drawing petrol (or diesel) from the tank and sending it to the engine at the correct pressure and in a constant quantity, regardless of engine speed or the amount of fuel left. In modern cars, it is almost always submerged in the tank itself and is a single module that contains: the pump itself, the float connected to a level sensor, which tells the ECU and the dashboard how much fuel there is; a fine mesh filter to trap impurities and a pressure regulator. When you turn the key, the ECU powers the pump for 2-3 seconds, pressurising the injection system; the electric pump draws fuel from the tank through the fine mesh filter, generates pressure, and pushes the fuel through a pipe to the engine. The fuel arrives at the rail (or throttle body); a pressure regulator maintains constant pressure. Once the engine is running, the pump continues to operate steadily; if the engine stops, the ECU immediately deactivates the pump to prevent fuel from continuing to flow, posing a fire risk.
