How We Get Hot and Cold Air in the Car

In this short video, we will see how the air conditioning system in our car provides hot and cold air: the two key components are the air conditioning evaporator, which generates cold air, and the heater radiator, which generates hot air (exchanging heat from the engine's boiling coolant). A motor/fan pushes air from outside, and there are a series of flaps (operated by the cabin controls) that direct the airflow to one of the two components (or a mix of both). The three modes are cold air: the flaps direct all air through the cold evaporator, and the air conditioning compressor is active. Hot air: the flaps direct air through the hot engine radiator; the air conditioning is off. Air conditioning: the flaps pass air first through the evaporator to dehumidify it, then through the radiator to heat it. This provides warm, dry air to demist the windows and is comfortable.
