Operation: How the clutch works

How does a clutch work? These very simple drawings explain it to us well. When it is necessary to disconnect the engine from the wheels, then the clutch intervenes, as in gear changes, which if the engine were connected, the gearbox would have violent jerks from the engine and would have a short life. The clutch transmits the motion by friction, until it is disconnected by means of the pedal. The motor transmits motion to a disc facing another disc which is connected to the secondary shaft. If the two disks mate, motion is transmitted; when they go away, then no more. In the video you can see very explanatory drawings that show how motion is transmitted from the engine to the secondary shaft via the clutch. It also illustrates well the function of the pressure plate and the clutch rods. He then shows a photo of the bell spring which tends to pack all the organs it contains. The parts that rotate with the motor force the disc to rotate at its own speed. This is the "attached" clutch mode. Behind the clutch disc members there is a bearing called thrust bearing, which has no influence until I press the pedal. When this happens, it exerts a push on the diaphragm spring, which will tend to flatten, freeing the disc from its grip, thus detaching the wheels from the engine. This is the type of clutch known as "dry single plate", but it is not the only type, even if it is the most common.

Today we will see, in this video tutorial, how to remove and replace the gear knob on the second series Lancia Ypsilon, but also on the Lancia Musa, in simple and quick steps. We get inside the car and start by removing the old gear knob; to do this, just unscrew it anticlockwise, as shown in the video. At this point we also remove the gearshift gaiter, in order to replace, if necessary, it too; we just have to fix the new headset and insert the new gear knob, screwing it correctly and without creating play on the gear lever!
