Differences Between Auxiliary Belt and Timing Belt

The auxiliary belt, also known as the "serpentine belt" due to its construction, drives various components such as the alternator, power steering, air conditioning, and water pump. If it breaks, the alternator won't charge the battery, the air conditioning won't work, and the power steering will fail.

It is usually located on the outermost part. Replacement is straightforward and relatively inexpensive.

The timing belt, however, is a different matter; it is replaced at significant mileage and is crucial for synchronising two main parts of the engine, the cylinder head and the engine block. If the belt slips, the vehicle will stop, and in the worst-case scenario, it can cause severe engine damage.

This belt has internal teeth and is enclosed within a protective cover. Replacing it is labour-intensive, as many components must be removed, and unlike the auxiliary belt, wear is not visible but can lead to substantial damage.
