How to Identify an Engine Oil Leak

Model: Volkswagen Passat 3BG, B5 - Years 1996-2005

Any engine oil leaks can generate fumes and vapours that tend to enter the cabin through the air vents, causing unpleasant odours.
To locate the oil leak, start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature: this will enable you to see the fumes at the point where the oil is leaking.
In the 3.0 V6 engine, the oil leak is generally located near the timing chain tensioners due to a failure of the gasket. Specifically, one tensioner is located at the rear left (when facing the engine), just below the hose connecting the air filter to the intake manifold; the other is found at the front right, near the engine oil filler cap, and the leak will tend to smear the area around the oil filter.
