Repairing the Micro Switch for the Automatic Gear Lever

Model: Volkswagen Transporter T25, T3, MK 3 - Years 1979-1990

In vehicles with an automatic gearbox, the engine can only be started if the gear lever is in the "P" position for parking: this information is communicated to the engine management unit via a micro switch located under the gear lever; a malfunction of this device can prevent the engine from starting. To access the micro switch, remove the gear lever handle by unscrewing the side fixing screw and the lower cover. At this point, disconnect the micro switch and remove it by unscrewing the relevant fixing screw; you also need to remove the closure contact located under the gear lever. Ensure the spring is functioning correctly and apply solder to the closure contact to compensate for wear, smoothing it with sandpaper (repeat the process if necessary).
