To open the Volkswagen Tiguan remote when the battery is flat or if there are other issues, use the mechanical door lock. Extract the key from the remote by pressing the appropriate button on the back.

This allows you to leverage the key under the lock cover, which can be removed to access the actual lock. At this point, insert the key, turn it counter-clockwise, and open the door.
