How to Replace the Steering Rack End on the VW Passat 3C

If you notice play in the steering wheel rotation and a noise that increases while driving on uneven surfaces, it means the ball joint of the tie rod end (or axial joint) of the steering rack has worn. To replace it comfortably, lift the vehicle and remove the front wheel. Before loosening the nut that secures the end to the hub support, use a 24 mm spanner to loosen the lock nut located on the tie rod, just behind the end. Then proceed to remove the nut and extract the end using a fork tool. Loosen the old end while counting the number of turns, then screw in the new one with the same number of turns, secure it to the hub support, and tighten the lock nut. It is advisable to replace the other end as well and check the alignment on a tracking bench.
