Replacing the Thermostat

Model: Volvo S40 MK 1 - Years 1995-2004

It is recommended to perform this operation with the engine cold. Once you have opened the front bonnet and securely propped it up, remove the plastic cover located over the timing belt. At this point, you can locate the thermostat housing, which is beneath the aluminium flange connected to the rubber hose leading to the radiator. Remove the flange securing screws and lift it to access the thermostat. Extract the old thermostat and insert the new one. Before repositioning the aluminium flange, it is advisable to replace the existing gasket or apply suitable gasket sealant. Finally, tighten the flange securing screws and reattach the plastic cover.
Check the coolant level in the appropriate reservoir, start the engine, and wait for it to reach operating temperature (90°C), ensuring it remains stable as confirmation of the new thermostat's correct operation.
