Instructions for Removing the Engine Cylinder Head

Model: Audi A2 MK 1 - Years 1999-2005
Part: Cylinder head

If white smoke comes from the exhaust upon starting the engine, it is likely that there is a failure in the cylinder head gasket causing water to enter the cylinders. Begin by inspecting the cylinders by removing the spark plugs: if you have a borescope, the task will be easier, as you will notice the fogging of the camera due to water vapour. Proceed to remove the cylinder head to replace the gasket: start by removing the intake manifold, the timing cover, the coolant hoses, the throttle cable, and the throttle body, the thermostat, the other coolant hoses, and the support springs of the exhaust manifold (lifting the vehicle). Next, remove the rocker cover and the timing belt (after aligning the timing marks). At this point, unscrew the fastening bolts of the cylinder head and lift it from its seat, getting assistance due to its considerable weight, to access the gasket seat, re-tapping the threaded holes on the cylinder block. Reverse the process for installing the new gasket, considering whether to completely refurbish the cylinder head (valve seats, seals...) and replace other elements such as the timing belt.
