How to Fix the Parking Sensors on BMW 5 Series E61

If engaging reverse causes the yellow warning light for parking sensor malfunction to illuminate on the instrument cluster, the issue may be due to a failure of one of the parking sensors embedded in the rear bumper or the related control unit. The first thing to try is to check the connections of the control unit: it is located in the trunk, beneath the spare tire well. To access it, remove the spare tire, take off the carpet lining, and also remove the styrofoam insert. The parking sensor control unit is the black one at the rear: disconnect the corresponding plugs by releasing the bayonet locks, check the oxidation state of the pins, and perhaps spray some contact cleaner. Reconnect everything and before reassembling, perform a functionality check.
