Removing the Steering Wheel on a BMW 1 Series

Model: BMW Serie 1 E81, E82, MK 1, E87 - Years 2004-2013

Before proceeding with the removal of the steering wheel, which contains the airbag and electrical components, disconnect the battery (it is sufficient to disconnect the negative terminal) for safety reasons. Insert a small flathead screwdriver into the two holes on either side of the steering wheel and lever it out to release the airbag (disconnect its connector). Now disconnect the wires inside the steering wheel and unscrew the bolts to remove it from its housing. Once this is done, you can continue to remove the steering wheel if you need to replace only some parts; otherwise, proceed in reverse with the installation of the new steering wheel.
