The following video tutorial explains how to reset the "ECU" (Engine Control Unit) to factory settings on a BMW 5 Series (the same procedure applies to BMW E39 models, 528i, 540i, M5, M52). First, turn the key to activate the instrument cluster. At this point, press the accelerator pedal and hold it down for five seconds.

The next step is to turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position. Without removing the key, lift your foot off the accelerator.

Wait two minutes and remove the key. Insert it again, and the "ECU" function will be reset and restored to how it was when the vehicle left the factory.
