Checking the Radiator Cap for Coolant

If you need to carry out any checks on the engine cooling system, ensure the engine is cold. When the engine is hot, the coolant is under pressure, and attempting to open the expansion tank or radiator cap could result in burns. Once the engine has cooled, inspect the system, ensuring there is no rust or sludge under the radiator and expansion tank caps. This rules out oil passing through the head gasket or air infiltrating the system.
