What to do if you hear a squeak from the clutch pedal on a Fiat Punto

A squeak from the clutch pedal on a second-generation Fiat Punto is a common issue. The most frequent cause is the clutch hydraulic pump (slave cylinder), which wears out over time and begins to squeak. However, this is not the only possibility. Other potential causes could be a worn release bearing: you will hear a metallic squeak when pressing the pedal, or the clutch lever or pivot lacking lubrication: you will hear a dry and intermittent squeak, or the receiver cylinder (on the gearbox) leaking or stuck. What to do? First, check the clutch fluid level; if it is low, top it up and check for any leaks, then lubricate the pedal lever and pivots with lithium grease. If the squeak persists, the pump or release bearing needs replacing. Do not ignore the problem: a faulty pump can leave you without a clutch. Replacing the pump is a simple job, but it requires bleeding the system.
