When replacing the timing belt, proper timing is absolutely essential, meaning aligning the references between the camshaft and the crankshaft to ensure the synchronisation of the pistons' up and down movement with the opening and closing of the valves.

An error in timing will cause a delay or advance in the ignition sequence in the cylinders, compromising the engine's regular operation, which will not only fail to work correctly but will also consume much more fuel.

This is why there are marks between the toothed pulleys and the engine block that must be kept perfectly aligned.
