Ford Focus - Video tutorial

Model: Ford Focus MK 1 - Years 1998-2004
Part: Drums and shoes
Operation: Replacing the brake shoes and actuator barrel on a drum brake system

In this video, the brake shoes and rear wheel cylinder of a Ford Focus are replaced. First the rear wheel cover is removed with a screwdriver, after which the wheel itself is removed. Using the hammer and a chisel, the fairing protecting the hub is removed; a correct pocket must then be used to remove the central nut. Open the drum brake cover. Hook the handle of a bucket to the central hub: it will serve as a means of collecting the liquid that you will pour on the brake for its cleaning. Analyzing the jaws it can be seen that they appear worn and even cracked. Using pliers, release the upper return springs. We also remove the clips that hold the jaws. We extract the brake shoes but first disconnect the parking brake rod with a pliers. Also disassemble and unclip the brake oil duct: obviously the oil will gush out, so block the leakage with a rubber cap. Also unscrew the actuator barrel retainers from the back and fit a new one using the same nuts as the old one to secure it. Re-attach and screw the oil duct and clean any residues. Take some new jaws and fit them in the position of the old ones and attach the clips as before. Re-engage the return springs and the parking brake linkage. Put the brake cover back on and tighten the central nut, replace the hub fairing and reassemble the wheel. Finally replace the wheel trim.

Handbrake adjustment on Ford Ecosport

First remove the plastic profile at the base of the gear lever. To do this, slightly widen the side edges and carefully lift it to release it. There is no need to remove it completely, just move it forward to avoid bother. Now remove the plastic center console around the handbrake by first working from the rear to release it and lifting it until the brake lever passes. Also in this case it is not necessary to remove it completely but, paying attention to the connected cables, it can be stowed in front of the passenger seat. At this point we notice that at the base of the handbrake lever, on the front, we find a nut. By acting on it, with a 10 wrench, we can adjust the brake force, increasing it by turning the nut clockwise, or decreasing it by turning it counterclockwise. Once adjusted, the center console can be repositioned first, pressing lightly to engage it, and then the profile of the gearbox base.
