Timing Belt Replacement

Model: Hyundai Sonata EF - Years 1998-2005

Lift the vehicle on a hydraulic ramp, remove the front right wheel (passenger side), and take off the wheel arch cover to access the pulleys. Loosen the tensioner of the auxiliary belt to remove it. Then, remove the plastic cover from above the engine, detach the power steering pump and its reservoir without removing the pulley and pipes. Next, remove the tensioner of the auxiliary belt and the timing cover. Also, take off the idler pulley (plastic pulley) of the auxiliary belt, the crankshaft pulley, and the other piece of the timing cover. Rotate the crankshaft until all timing marks are aligned, and only then start removing the tensioner of the timing belt. Apply a support under the engine as it is necessary to remove the engine mount for easier access to the timing components, as well as the bracket from the block. Before fitting the new belt, also replace the water pump, the idler pulley, and the tensioner; finally, install the new belt and all previously removed components. It is advisable to also install a new auxiliary belt kit.
