The valve cover gasket of a car can leak for various reasons, such as a lost bolt or a worn cover. The valve cover is located on top of the cylinder head and covers the valves, which are opened and closed by rockers directly moved by the pushrods. There should be no high-pressure oil around the valves to avoid damaging the gasket. The valve cover gasket is almost always what ensures the engine's seal, which is why it must be kept in good condition and free from leaks.
