If the message "go to workshop without changing gears" appears on your Mercedes display, it means that the automatic transmission control system has detected an anomaly. To protect itself from potential damage, the transmission control unit locks the transmission in emergency mode (usually 2nd gear) and prevents gear changes. This is a temporary mode or "limp mode". The most common cause is a weak or failing battery, as the transmission solenoids require stable voltage to operate. Another cause could be degraded transmission fluid that needs to be replaced. Additionally, on high-mileage vehicles, the valve body, which is the brain of the transmission, may be failing (though this is quite rare).
