Removing the turbocharger is a maintenance task that can be done as a DIY project, but be aware that you may encounter seized bolts that secure the turbo flange to the exhaust manifold: continuous overheating cycles tend to deform and seize them. That said, perform this operation with the engine cold, disconnecting the inlet and outlet pipes from the compressor side, then unscrew the bolts that secure the turbo flange to the exhaust manifold. Once you notice significant play in the core assembly caused by wear on the bearings, proceed accordingly.
