- Years 2002-2009 The guide shows you how to do the Dodge RAM 1500 Mk3 fuel pump replacement. Disconnect the pump electrical connector from the bottom of the vehicle near the left rear wheel. Open the fuel cap and start the engine for a few minutes to drain all the fuel from the system. From the engine compartment, disconnect the battery and remove the air filter box. Remove the engine cover to access the engine fuel drain valve, located on the left side of the engine near the engine oil dipstick. Open the valve cap and place a container to collect the fluid, with a screwdriver or a probe pry the cap to drain the fuel. Disassemble the canister of the emission filter to lighten the tank. Unscrew the tank fixing bolts and lower it. Disconnect the hoses and completely remove the tank. Unscrew the pump fixing ring and replace it. Put everything back in place and start the engine to circulate the fuel.
