Let's see how to reset the engine light (check engine) on a Subaru Forester. The safest and most correct method is to use an OBD2 tool. Locate the EOBD port under the steering wheel, in the column area, connect the scanner to the port, turn the ignition on without starting the engine, and then follow the scanner's instructions to read the error codes (this way, you can understand why the light came on) and then erase the codes. Once erased, the light will turn off. The advantage of this method is that it not only clears the light but also helps identify the underlying issue. The second method involves disconnecting the negative battery cable for a few minutes, allowing the ECU to reset completely. However, this method also resets other settings (clock, windows, radio), which will then require reprogramming. The third method is to check the fuel cap, as sometimes the engine light comes on if it is not properly closed, or if the seal is worn or damaged. After resolving the issue, the light may turn off by itself after a few driving cycles, without any manual reset.
