How a power steering pump works

Let's see how a power steering pump (or hydraulic steering pump) works. This component helps the driver steer with less effort, especially at low speeds or when the car is stationary: the pump is actually the heart of the system because it generates the pressure needed to move the hydraulic fluid, which in turn assists the steering movement. The pump is connected to the engine via a belt and rotates proportionally to the engine speed; it draws fluid from the reservoir and pushes it into the high-pressure system: If the steering is straight, the fluid returns to the reservoir. When we turn the steering wheel, a directional valve directs the fluid to the side opposite the turn, aiding the movement. The pressure of the fluid pushes a piston or assists the movement of the rack, reducing the driver's effort.
