How to Check the ABS Wheel Speed Sensor

The ABS speed sensor is located near the wheel hub, in front of a toothed ring called the tone ring. Before checking the speed sensor, ensure that the ABS warning light is illuminated on the dashboard, that braking is less stable, or that the ABS is not engaging. Once you locate the sensor, check for dirt or any damage to the cable. Clean it with electrical contact spray to resolve half of the issues. To perform a multimeter check, set the multimeter to ohms and use the typical values of 800 - 2000 ohms. If it shows an open circuit or zero, it means the sensor has shorted or is broken and needs replacing. If it displays a speed, the sensor is active. It is important to check the speed of each wheel. Sometimes the ABS light activates even when the issue is not related to the sensor but to the tone ring, a damaged wheel bearing, or interrupted wiring. Replace the sensor only if the values are out of specification, if there are no signals, or if there is visible damage.
