The MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor is a crucial component in modern petrol and diesel engines. Its function is to measure the amount of air entering the engine to allow the ECU to accurately dose the amount of fuel to inject. It ensures the correct air-fuel ratio (14.7:1 for petrol); optimises power, fuel consumption, and emissions; allows the ECU to adjust ignition timing and boost pressure (in turbo engines). Symptoms of a dirty or faulty MAF include engine stalling or rough idling; loss of power during acceleration; increased fuel consumption; black smoke (if diesel) or a rich mixture (petrol); and the engine light coming on. Keeping the MAF sensor clean is simple. Use a quality air filter and replace it regularly, avoid driving on very dusty roads without an efficient air filter, and clean the sensor with a specific spray (MAF cleaner) at least every 30,000-50,000 miles. Do not use generic solvents or compressed air (risk of damaging the filament). Do not touch the sensor filament with your fingers.
