A clutch can be operated in three ways: first, the pedal is directly connected to the cable; second, there is a hydraulic pump that presses a bearing, which in turn presses the clutch plate; third, there is an electronic clutch where the brake pedal has been replaced by an electro-actuator.

This refers to a MANUAL GEARBOX. If you are in a high gear and the revs increase but the speed does not, this is a clear sign that the clutch is beginning to wear.

The more you downshift and it continues to happen, the more worn the clutch is. The second symptom is when the clutch 'grabs' because it may be contaminated with oil or the plate, flywheel, or clutch disc is worn. The third factor is when the clutch pedal disengages.

The further it disengages at the end of its travel, the more worn the clutch is.
