In this video, we explore the problems that can arise from a malfunctioning mass air flow sensor: irregularities during acceleration, excessive fuel consumption, and the vehicle entering protection mode during acceleration. The mass air flow sensor is located near the air filter box and delivers air to the intake manifold, helping the ECU determine how much air is entering the engine, thus mixing the correct amount of fuel.

Consequently, if it is dirty or fails, the vehicle experiences malfunctions. The grille on the front of the sensor is designed to prevent turbulence.

At the mid-section, there is a measuring element which is a heated wire; the ECU will determine, based on how much energy it needs to keep this wire warm, how much air the engine is requesting, allowing for the correct injection timing. Therefore, if the heated wire is dirty or broken, it is clear that nothing functions properly.

With sports air filters, they can become dirty more easily; we know that sports filters require a special oil, which can sometimes be over-sprayed from the filter, potentially burning the heated wire. So, exercise greater caution in this case.
