In this video we see what problems can arise from a malfunctioning airflow meter: irregularities during acceleration, excessive fuel consumption, vehicle entering protection mode during acceleration. The airflow meter is a sensor located near the air filter box and brings air to the intake manifold, and it is used by the ECU to determine how much air is entering the engine, and therefore mix the right amount of fuel. Consequently, if it is dirty or breaks, the vehicle will have malfunctions. The grid on the front of the sensor is used to avoid turbulence. In the middle section is the measuring element which is a hot wire; the ECU will determine, based on how much energy is needed to keep this wire hot, how much air the engine is demanding, in order to provide the correct injection timing. So if the hot wire is dirty or interrupted, nothing will work anymore. With sports air filters, they can get dirty more easily; we know that sports filters require a special oil, which is sometimes sprayed too much by the filter and can burn the hot wire, so we need to be more careful in this case.
