Dismantling and Replacing the Steering Wheel

Model: Volkswagen Polo MK IV, Polo IV, Polo 4, MK 4, 9N - Years 2001-2009

Since removing the steering wheel requires taking off the airbag container, disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to prevent the airbag warning light from illuminating.
Position the steering wheel with the depth adjustment fully out; rotate the wheel 90° and, using a medium-sized flat screwdriver, access the airbag retaining springs through the holes directly behind the wheel and lever them to release the springs; repeat the operation on the diametrically opposite spoke.
Once the airbag is released, disconnect the connector from the steering wheel.
At this point, unscrew the steering wheel retaining bolt and, before pulling it off, mark the mounting position with the wheels perfectly straight (as there is no fixed reference notch on the steering wheel spline).
Insert the new steering wheel (ensuring it is positioned with the spokes straight), tighten the retaining bolt, reconnect the airbag plug, and secure it back in place; reconnect the battery terminal.
