How to adjust the handbrake of the Volkswagen Passat B5

On this vehicle, the adjustment is not made from the lever, but directly from the rear cables. The two adjusters are located underneath the car, in the central area of the tunnel just in front of the fuel tank, above the exhaust line. They are accessible by removing a heat shield, for which we need to unscrew 6 nuts of 10 mm. Right underneath are the handbrake cables: each cable ends with an adjusting tensioner, and each adjuster has a plastic lever that locks it in position. We insert the tip of a screwdriver behind this tab and push it outward to unlock it (or we can detach the safety pin with pliers). Once unlocked, we can manually turn the black adjuster: turning it counterclockwise increases the tension; turning it clockwise decreases the tension. It is important to adjust the cables with the same tension. After each small adjustment, we should test with the lever, which should lock between the 3rd and 4th click, but we must ensure that the rear wheels turn freely with the brake released. Once the adjustment is made, we reassemble everything and lower the rear of the car back down.
