Replacing the Timing Belt

Replacing the timing belt requires good mechanical knowledge, as a simple error in timing the engine could cause severe damage. Start by removing the plastic cover on the engine, the air filter box, and the protective cover of the timing belt itself. Disconnect the vacuum hoses from above the rocker cover to remove it and take off the cap on the gearbox to check the timing references; then remove the right front wheel to access the pulleys, loosen the tensioner of the auxiliary belt and remove it, rotate the crankshaft pulley until the timing references align, and apply the camshaft locking tool to keep these references fixed. Then remove the outer pulley of the crankshaft, remove the protective cover, loosen the tensioner of the timing belt, and remove it, always ensuring that the pulleys do not move.
