This video provides interesting details about the regeneration of the particulate filter on the Volkswagen Polo 1.6 TDI: the first thing to know is that this occurs at very variable mileages. This depends on the type of roads you have driven, as if you have done a lot of motorway driving or fast roads, it can take up to 1,000 miles before regeneration is needed; however, if you have driven a lot in the city with stop-and-go traffic, it may only take less than 200 miles for regeneration to be necessary. This vehicle does not have a light to indicate that regeneration is in progress, but the symptoms are evident: the revs increase, it performs less at speed, and there is intense heat emanating from the engine bay. Regenerations should not be interrupted; if it happens for any particular reason, upon restarting, the process resumes from where you left off. Regarding the time it takes to regenerate, if you take the vehicle on a good stretch of motorway, it regenerates much quicker compared to leaving it idling.
